Castelnaud

Come and discover this idyllic, historical setting!

Castelnaud is one of the Most Beautiful Villages in France, not to be missed! Located 20 minutes from the campsite on a rocky outcrop, come and discover its rich heritage and enjoy a perfect place for family outdoor activities.

Discover the medieval village

Castelnaud was built in the 12th century and constructed in terraces. During your walk you’ll discover the steep streets and the old houses covered with slate, with their unique architecture.

The church of Saint-Michel-Archange also contributes to the charm of the village. It is dedicated to Saint Michel, who once chased away the angel Lucifer and brought down the Dragon of the Apocalypse.

Near the village, the Eco-Musée de la Noix (eco-museum of the walnut) is housed in an 18th century farmhouse. You’ll find out all there is to know about the walnut production in the Périgord! If you are a Périgord truffle enthusiast, don’t miss visiting the truffle area of the Vielcroze estate.

Le Château de Castelnaud and the Château des Milandes

At an altitude of 300 metres, visit the castle of Castelnaud and immerse yourself in the Middle Ages. Today, it houses the Museum of War in the Middle Ages. You can see a collection of weapons and armour dating from the 15th and 17th centuries. Outside, war machinery is on display. Discover the famous trebuchet (catapult) that could send 80kg projectiles up to 300 meters.

Follow in the footsteps of Josephine Baker by visiting the Château des Milandes. Dating from the 15th century, this castle is a true architectural masterpiece. It thus marks the transition between the Gothic and Renaissance styles. Josephine Baker founded her “rainbow village” here to take in abandoned children. During your visit, you will discover a museum entirely dedicated to her life as a music-hall performer and resistance fighter. Don’t forget to stop off and visit the castle’s sublime French garden.
